With the kids out of school and the warm weather calling, summer is the perfect opportunity to get out and spend time with the family. Since August is National Family Fun Month, you have one more excuse to go on local family adventures before school starts again.
We have compiled a list of some of our favorite summertime activities to do with our families to give you a little inspiration.
Go to a farmer’s market
I love the one at the Frederick Fairgrounds because it seems to have a larger assortment of vendors. Plus, it’s dog friendly! And see if you can spot any companies that also have products at the Common Market. 😉
Go on a hike
With so much to see in the area, this is a great opportunity to explore and be quiet for just a little while. There are plenty of hiking locations too, like C&O Canal and Catoctin Mountain Park.
Take a day trip
Cunningham Falls State Park is a fun place to go for a day. With a small beach at the lake, families can soak up the sun and grill lunch. They even rent out kayaks and paddle boards during the peak months. Sandy Point in Annapolis is another fun day trip. If you are looking to bring your four-legged family member, Downs Memorial Park in Annapolis has a dog beach area, where dogs can romp in the Chesapeake and enjoy the sand between their paws (and all over their fur).
Go to the library
The Frederick County Public Libraries have events all year that are fun for the whole family. If your family isn’t keen on events, everyone could just take an afternoon to choose their favorite book. You could even do a scavenger hunt! You can use this list or make your own with things you want family members to know and learn (or even love)!
Go to the zoo.
The zoo is a great place to learn about animals we may not see everyday. What was your favorite animal?
And don’t forget the snacks. For snacks on the go, especially for those outdoor excursions, head to the Common Market. We have a variety of granola, seeds, and trail mix in our bulk department; fresh and dried fruit and vegetables; energy bars; and sustainable tuna for sandwiches (so you can feel good about what you’re using to fuel your body).
What activities are you going to try? What snacks does your family absolutely have to have when they go on adventures? Let us know in the comments!
